NGOs urged to effect decisions
By MOHAMMED DAKANE
Failure to implement conflict-resolution decisions taken at workshops
in North Eastern Province has been of major concern, a top administrator
says.
Garissa District Commissioner Mabeya Mogaka said at a workshop in Garissa
town that security was important for development. He called on non-governmental
organisations to assist in sensitising the community to the importance
of maintaining peace.
The workshop, at the Garissa Teachers' Training College, was sponsored
by Oxfam and facilitated by the Arid Land Resource Management Project.
The DC added that resolutions made at the North Eastern leaders' conference
on security last month had been followed by a workshop on conflict resolution
in the district.
Mr Mogaka called on the Oxfam country representative, Mr Mohammed Ali,
to source donor funding for eradication of insecurity in North Eastern
Kenya.
The Oxfam deputy national coordinator, Mr Mahboub Maalim, said that
the Arid Land Project, under the Office of the President and Oxfam, a British
NGO, had initiated the seminar to seek a framework for a long-term solution
to conflict in arid and semi-arid areas in the country.
Mr Maalim said the project covers more than 10 districts.
