Another Cup on Impala's shelf

By FRANCIS MUREITHI

High-riding Impala RFC showed what material they are made off when they clinched the 11th edition of the Great Rift Ten-a-side rugby tournament at the Nakuru Athletics Club on Sunday.

By winning the trophy the red shirts with six international players in their playing unit have stamped their authority in the rugby scene in the country and are poised to win more trophies if their current form is anything to go by.

Apart from the Great Rift cup, Impala are the reigning champions of the Impala Floodlit, George Mwangi Kabeberi memorial Sevens' and Kenya Harlequin Blakrock tournament.

Impala started the tournament on a false note and lost their opening match on a 14 - 0 basis after they arrived late and thus giving their opponents Heathens of Uganda an easy walkover.

However in the subsequent matches there was nothing to stop the impressive Impala who beat their opponents convincingly to qualify for the finals against the Nondiescripts.

And what a final. The epic match played on a dusty pitch was full of thrills and after the regular 20 minutes there was no try scored forcing the match to be extended into three minutes session of extra time but still the score remained 0 - 0.

However in the second half of the another two minutes of sudden death, Impala 's Mitchell Ocholla broke lose and evaded two harsh tackles and sprinted past two Nondies defenders to bury a massive try which gave his team the cup for the second year running.

As if that was not enough Impala III reigned supreme in the Plate competiton when they grabbed the crown after beating Nazarene University 15 -12 in the final.

However the pride of place should go to Moi University who captured Plate cup in the B Division of the tournament after dismissing Impala II 5 - 0 with Eric Mudako providing the lone try of the match.

The Eldoret based students who were more aggressive in their approach in the two-day tournament were a joy to watch and given more exposure they are set to go places.

Kenya Harlequin who are the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup champions were a pale shadow of themselves bowing out of the tournament in the early stages.
