Leopards come roaring back
By NATION Correspondents
Leopards 2 Coast Stars 0
AFC Leopards celebrated the announcement of their long over-due election
with a double – a brilliant 2-0 victory over Coast Stars and the COTU Cup
– in a thoroughly exciting Premiership match at the City Stadium yesterday.
The game opened at a cracking pace with Coast dictating the early pace
with a series of raids. But soon Leopards, who lost 0-2 to Nzoia Sugar
on Saturday, weathered the storm with counter-attacks, grabbing the lead
in the 21st minute.
Mohammed Balala got through but as he prepared to shoot, he was cut
down by Coast Stars central defender Evans Anduso inside the box and the
referee unhesitatingly pointed to the spot. Taking the resultant kick,
veteran Francis Oduor, making a come-back after several months lay-off,
sent the Stars goalkeeper Athuman Mfaume the wrong way.
Inspired Leopards stepped their goal-hunt and their efforts were rewarded
when Balala robbed a Stars defender and put over a defence-slitting centre.
The ball reached Oscar Kadenge who controlled it beautifully, picked his
spot and hit in a ground shot which hit the upright on its way to the net.
Coast Stars rushed back to the offensive, but the Leopards defence in
which Evans Majani, Salim Keya, Nicholas Muyoti and Shabana Zadock held
out doggedly to the final whistle.
Announcing the election on behalf of Leopards chairman Francis Chahonyo,
during the interval break, organinsing secretary Dan "Mwangaza'' Muhangani
said the executive committee had agreed to go the polls at the Nyayo National
Stadium on May 27. p Kenyan Parliamentarians yesterday beat their Ugandan
counterparts 2-1 in an entertaining match at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Cheered on by a sizeable crowd which included vice-president George
Saitoti, the Kenyan MPs sent gloom across the terraces after Daniel Khaniri
shot wide a penalty in the first minute. Five minutes later Peter Ngugi
shot wide in front of an open goal. But on the 35th minute Agengo collected
a lose ball from the right flank and crossed to Ngugi who found the target
with ease.
On resumption the Ugandans fought hard but could not penetrate the strong
Kenyan defence but on the 60th minute Madete found an opening for the equaliser.
But Wamunyinyi was on the mark a minute later to score the winning goal.
Both teams settled to a 2-2 draw in Mombasa on Sunday. Uganda had been
beaten 6-0 at Mbale, Uganda in the first of three matches.
Musco 1 Agrochemical 1
Musco and Agrochemical settled for a 1-1 draw in a the Western Zone
Super League at Muhoroni yesterday.
Musco took the lead in the fifth minute through David Opudo only for
Joseph Muyan to equalise for Agrochemical in the 60th minute.
