Muslims oppose use of condoms

By NATION Team

A Muslim leader in Mombasa has rejected the use of condoms in the fight against Aids saying it would turn the country into a Sodom and Gomorra.

A spokesman for the Council of Imams in Mombasa, Sheikh Ali Shee, on Tuesday wondered why President Moi had for a very long time rejected the use of condoms only to change his mind.

Sheikh Shee said President Moi was under pressure from donors to support the use of condoms and hence his about turn.. Sheikh Shee called for lowering of the age of consent for marriage so that young Kenyans could get married early to avoid having pre-marital sex.

The council once again called for a ban on immoral publications and television programmes saying they were helping spread Aids.

Mr Abdulahi Abdi dismissed the use condoms in the war against Aids saying that those who have failed to observe chastity should be left to die for their evil actions.

But the managing director of Bongo Tours, Mr Karl Heinz Straus, said using condoms was the only sure way to protect people against Aids.

He said it would be naive to assume that abstinence and faithfulness alone can prevent the spread of Aids.
