By NATION Reporter
A Chinese puppet troupe is in the country staging a number of shows.
The Chengdu Puppet and Shadow Show Theatre arrived on Tuesday,
ready for their scheduled five performances at the Kenya National Theatre.
The Kenyan tour is part of an African tour, that will take them
to several other countries in the continent.
Already, the 20-man team gave an account of themselves, when they
staged their premiere show on Wednesday evening. Cabinet Minister Shariff
Nassir was expected to be chief guest.
The world acclaimed group has a unique style, whose simplicity
adds to its beauty.
Based on the traditional Sichuan opera, Chengdu Puppet and Shadow
Theatre borrows from the creative works of other puppet theatres in China,
to achieve a beautiful blend that leaves show goers asking for more.
The shows will be part of the entertainment for families out to
enjoy themselves this weekend, especially the children who should find
the puppet shows thrilling.
The troupe has performed in Japan, Thailand, Germany, the Netherlands,
Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal and Korea, where their shows enraptured
many.
Meanwhile, a mixed group of French and Malagasy dancers brought
the energy and drive of urban life onto stage for their single performance
of hip hop music and dance at the National Theatre last weekend.
The performance transformed the theatre into a humming auditorium
with audience participation, singing along with star Samuoela singer and
Seta, the Saxophonist.
The PCEA Eastleigh drama group has embarked on a theatrical campaign
to eradicate drug use and other vices in schools and colleges. The group
is using drama as a tool to educate and entertain the youth on the dangers
in society today.
This Sunday, they will be at Trikha Girls Secondary School presenting
their award-winning play, The stigma, which handles the vices of
drug abuse, sexual promiscuity and abortion among the youth in Kenya.
After the Trikha show, the group plans to go round staging the
play in schools and colleges with the aim of making students better people.
The play features young experienced stage personalities including
Irene Mugure, Sam Kihiu, Nelson Mbugua and Collins Waweru.
