Nyachae challenges Nassir

By SUNDAY NATION Correspondent

Ford People leader Simeon Nyachae on Friday said he was moving his presidential campaign to the coastal region despite threats by Cabinet minister Shariff Nassir.

Accompanied by nine MPs, Mr Nyachae told Mr Nassir to dare disrupt his scheduled rally.

Ousted Mombasa mayor Mashood Mwahima said preparations had been finalised to humiliate Mr Nassir, the Mvita MP.

Mr Nyachae said he was not "a political coward" to be intimidated by the likes of Mr Nassir.

Mr Nassir was recently quoted as saying Mr Nyachae, his former Cabinet colleague, was not welcome in Mombasa. He has since said anyone was welcome to visit the town but in the knowledge that Kanu will win anyway.

During the rally at Nyanturago sportsground in his Nyaribari Chache constituency, Mr Nyachae reconciled with the controversial Bomachoge MP, Mr Zephania Nyang'wara.

It was the first public meeting between the two since Mr Nyang'wara, also Kanu MP, deserted the Nyachae camp and rejoined the government.

Mr Nyang'wara was applauded when he declared: "I am remorseful for having embarrassed you (Nyachae) and I'm sorry for I was misled by the Kanu government."

He said he will decamp from Kanu "at an opportune time".

MPs Gitobu Imanyara, James Magara, Jimmy Angwenyi, Henry Obwocha, Muthusi Kitonga, Zebedeo Opore and Kipkalia Kones urged other opposition presidential candidates to support Mr Nyachae's presidential bid.

They said Mr Mwai Kibaki, Mr Kijana Wamalwa and Mrs Charity Ngilu were running short of time to identify a presidential candidate.
