Harambee Stars triumph

By SUNDAY NATION Team

Harambee Stars 1 Taifa Stars 0

Substitute John Barasa yesterday scored in the 76th minute to give Harambee Stars a 1-0 victory over visiting Taifa Stars of Tanzania in a friendly at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi.

This was a good revenge for the Kenyans doing just enough to wipe out some of the memories of a 3-1 defeat by Tanzania in the final of the Castle Lager Cup in Mwanza, Tanzania last October.

Haramber Stars could have scored more goals. They had a lot of missed chances with the culprit being Dennis Oliech who was denied five times by Tanzania goalkeeper and captain Peter Manyika.

As early as in the 12th minute Kenya, who dominated most of the match, came close to scoring when Nicholas Muyoti hit the post. One minute later Oliech sent a low left-footer which also hit the post. In the 30th minute Manyika was forced off his line to save a double attack by Titus Mulama and Oliech.

Eight minutes later, Tanzania made their first meaningful attack after Stephen Mapunda wriggled past the Harambee Stars' defence but Kenyan goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng was quick off his mark to grab the ball. Oliech came unstuckk against Manyika in the 40th minute from a point black range.

Tanzania coach, Mshindo Msolla, made three substitutions at the beginning of the second half introducing Nteze John, Yusuf Macho and Maulid Said for Sekilojo Chambwa, Mapunda and Kessy Semi but this did not yield any fruit.

Kenya coach Reinhard Fabisch also brought in goalkeeper Francis Onyiso for Ochieng.

The Tanzania coach said it was a good game but blamed the slippery pitch for the defeat. He said that the Taifa Stars was still being re-bulit and in the return match on May 18 in Arusha there will be many new faces. His opposite number Fabisch only said that his target still remains beating Togo on September 8 in the first match of the African Nations Cup qualifier.

Mombasa Heroes 0 Gor Mahia 0

A new-look Gor Mahia played better than in the recent past to hold home team Mombasa Heroes to a scoreless draw at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium in a dull Premier League match.

Fielding a completelty new team after sacking most of their old guard last month, the once mighty Gor Mahia who have been going through a torrid time played a determined game in the second half, twice hitting the cross bar and time and again forcing Mombasa Heroes' stylish goalkeeper Sulum Boi to dive full length to parry out dangerous shots for arbotive corners.

Mombasa Heroes had their share of missed chances through Isaac Oduor, Matano Mzee and Twaha Athman.

Red Berets 2 Re-union 1

A goal in each half gave Red Berets a 2-1 win over Reunion in a Premier League group B match at Limuru yesterday.

Berets' goals came from Sine Tony and Julius Odongo in the 30th and 50th minute respectively.

Johnson Obara scored for Re-union one minute to the end of first half.

The match was played in the muddy Bata groud and only a handful of spectators showed up.

Oserian 3 Panpaper 1

Premier League champions Oserian Fastac maintained the unbeaten home record when they defeated the visiting Panpaper 3-1 in a thrilling match at Oserian Sports Complex, Naivasha yesterday.

The florists, who dominated their opponents, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Boniface Ambani for a 1-0 half time lead.

After the recess, relentless pressure by the homeboys saw the Panpaper concede an own goal following a fierce attack by the marauding Oserian strikers.

In the 82nd minute, Ambani, who was the man-of-the-match sealed the fate for the papermen when he netted the winning goal.

Today Panpaper take on Ulinzi Stars at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru while Oserian play away to KCB at Limuru.
