Poor turn-out at Mombasa competition

Poor turn-out marked the fourth Eveready Energizer/KAAA weekend athletics meeting at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium on Friday.

Only ten international athletes attended the meet whose poor turn-out has been blamed on the uncertainties of the weather. Coast Amateur Athletic Association said many athletes might have decided to stay away after the third meeting in Kisumu was washed away owing to the current heavy countrywide.

The only notable names in the two-day event which has attracted 16 teams were Kennedy Ochieng' who qualified for the semi-finals of the 200m and 400m, Charles Gitonga, who qualified for the semi-finals of the 400m and Eric Keter who qualified for the semi-finals of the 200m.

Other top athletes included Margaret Kibet, whose speciality is the marathon and 10,000m, Angeline Kanana, Ben Maiyo, Joshua Pondo, Margaret Ngotho, Jane Omoro, Helen Kimaiyo, Bernard Kisilu and Kennedy Langat.

5000m: 1.Jane Omoro, Telkom, 16.31.6sec; 2. Grace Chebet, Telkom, 18.34.3; 3. Angeline Kanana, 19.02.2sec.
