Ngei funds drive now postponed to July 3
By NATION Correspondent
The Paul Ngei funds drive planned for today has been postponed to July
3.
The committee of parliamentarians organising the harambee said
yesterday the postponement was "a culmination of Thursday's police terror
on Nairobians on Budget Day, which created an atmosphere of discomfort".
The chairman, who is also the Voi MP, Mr Basil Mwakiringo, said
at a press conference at Parliament Buildings that this would also give
the public more time to raise money.
"In view of Thursday's unprovoked unleashing of terror on innocent
Kenyans, and in view of appeals from the public to allow them more time,
we have decided to reschedule the fundraiser," he said.
The committee accused a city MP of "organising youths" to disrupt
the peaceful demonstration.
The statement was signed by MPs Basil Mwakiringo (Voi), Beth Mugo
(Dagoretti), Shem Ochuodho (Rangwe), Norman Nyagah (Kamukunji), John Katuku
(Mwala), Muthusi Kitonga (Mutito) and Francis Wambua (Yatta).
Mr Ngei, a freedom fighter, was thrown out of his home on May
14 by auctioneers because of a Sh19 million debt.
