Gor go hunting on hostile grounds
By HEZEKIAH WEPUKHULU
Gor Mahia travel upcountry for a two-match Premier League outing at
venues that have, more often than not, proved not the best hunting grounds
for them.
Today they face their bogey team Nzoia Sugar at Kanduyi Stadium
where, over the years, they have hardly won a match.
Gor Mahia have a score to settle with Nzoia, who bundled them
out of last year's Moi Golden Cup kock-out tournament in a bad-tempered
clash.
The 2-1 defeat is still fresh in Gor's mind as their fans could not
take it, resorting to a riot, prompting the temporary resignation of chairman
Leslie Okudo in a huff.
Gor, parading their international stars, Charles Omondi, Tilien
Oguta and Eric Omondi, want to break the jinx with a respectable win, but
their defenders will be well advised to keep tabs on the dangerous Nzoia
strike force of prolific scorer Wanyonyi Wepukhulu, Macdonald Lihanda and
Ken Simiyu.
Tomorrow, Gor take on league leaders Mumias Sugar in a mouth-watering
clash at the Mumias.
This top-of-the-bill tie is the highlight of the bumper Premiership
programme this weekend.
Mumias, whose attack will be spearheaded by last year's joint
leading goal-scorer Patrick Mugata, will be going all out not only to consolidate
their position at the top, but also to maintain their unbeaten home run.
Meanwhile, Mumias fresh from their 1-0 mid-week win over Mathare
United, have another tie against the unpredictable Ulinzi Stars at the
same venue today.
Tusker and Utalii clash in a local derby at Ruaraka this afternoon.
Both teams look evenly-matched and a draw cannot be ruled out.
Chemelil, who held Gor to a scoreless draw last weekend, will
be at home again to Red Berets today and Ulinzi Stars tomorrow at Chemelil.
Mathare United, after going four matches without victory, are down for
one game they must win to regain their dented pride.
The Moi Golden Cup champions' match against Commercial Bank (KCB)
at the City Stadium today, has been called off. But they will host Brooke
Bond at Kasarani tomorrow.
Re-Union, who upset Shabana 1-0 at home last Sunday, will be away
to Kisumu All Stars in a bottom-of-the-table match at the Kenyatta Sportsground,
Kisumu, today. In other weekend fixtures, Eldoret KCC are at home to Oserian
at the Kipchoge Stadium today, Telekom entertain Red Berets at Kenyatta
Sportsground tomorrow, Utalii tackle Sony Sugar at Ruaraka and Rivatex
encounter Oserian at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium tomorrow.
Note: The Premier League fixtures were revised midweek after those
that appear on page 22 of The Nation's Saturday had been printed.
