Gumo got it all wrong on voter registration

Mr Fred Gumo's pronouncements carried by the Press on January 1 astounded me.

As a resident and a leader of Westlands, I take note of the fact that he remembered Westlands voters after only five years of silence. The utterances that accompanied the relief maize distribution were incredible.

It is barbaric, undemocratic and unfortunate for an assistant minister, who is supposed to preach unity at a national front, to publicly tell Kenyans that whoever tries to registers and vote in Westlands from elsewhere will be barred.

It looks as if he is yet to read the section of the Constitution stipulating that any Kenyan is free to register and vote in any constituency of his or her choice, provided his or her name appears in the relevant voters' register. Mr Gumo is not above the law and, therefore, cannot dictate to Kenyans where to register and vote.

Gumo is known for his arrogant and violent nature, but the peace-loving people of Westlands will not allow him to instigate violence in the constituency. His five-year term is fast drawing to an end and he is panicking as he has no tangible achievement to show the electorates. His boisterous approach to issues has left the poor Westlands residents even poorer.

Mr Gumo should know that in the next General Election we will ensure that all anti-rigging machinery is in place and that arrogance and violence does not see him to the House.

BETTY TETT,
Nairobi.
