State urged to allow traditional oathing

By NATION Correspondent

An MP wants the government to allow his community to practise oathing.

Kinango MP Simeon Mkalla asked the government to restrain chiefs from denying Kwale District residents the chance to take suspects to traditional medicinemen for oathing.

He said the Mijikenda community, especially the Durumas, determined the guilt of suspects after taking them to traditional medicinemen for oathing.

"And when they are caught, they are given special herbs which will prevent them from repeating the same mistakes. If the suspects are not caught or proved guilty by the oath, then they are compensated by their accusers," he said.

He was addressing a meeting at Vikolani trading centre, Samburu division in his constituency.

At the same time, he asked coastal communities to fully participate in the ongoing constitutional review process.

He said it was only through this that they could fight against issues such corruption, nepotism and discrimination which have hindered development in the region.
