This is no joking matter
Local Government minister Karisa Maitha
had better get serious. His flippant approach is hardly what one could
expect of a person charged with overseeing the running of all the local
authorities around the country. One would expect that the minister is conversant
with what needs to be done for these civic bodies to run efficiently and
deliver the services to residents.
Instead of clear-headed leadership
of this huge sector, all we're seeing are contradictions and confusion.
Several weeks ago, for instance, Minister Maitha announced hefty increases
in the salaries and allowances of mayors and councillors. The figures were
mind-boggling and many questioned whether the ever cash-strapped councils
could afford to pay. Of course, they can't and Mr Maitha has reversed the
decision. This is not good enough. Mr Maitha can do better than this.
