Build recreational sites for slum folks

During celebrations marking the World Habit Day, I listened to the impassioned speeches by various dignitaries pledging to give the slum dwellers in the cities of the world dignity through improving their living environments.

This raises one vital question. Can these good ideas be implemented through the provision of picnic and recreational sites for the urban poor in the forest areas of the cities, including Nairobi. This is what we were promised last year by the United Nations Environment Programme and our government, during similar celebrations.

Those who live in the crowded slums of our city are yearning for some breathing and free space to help restore our sanity. Some of the areas that we should be looking at include Uhuru Gardens in the Langata area, and Jamhuri Forest. Setting up these recreational facilties in these areas could make a good start to the programme.

Imbumi ole Makuku,
Kibera, Nairobi.
