News Sunday, October 19, 2003 Police probed in car theft syndicateBy
NATION Reporter
Several senior
police officers are under investigation following the recent busting of a car
theft racket in Nairobi. Detectives are looking for a Nairobi businessman suspected of involvement in a carjacking syndicate. The trader was linked to the racket by two suspects arrested yesterday at their homes in the Westlands and Kileleshwa suburbs. The two, who are being held at Gigiri Police Station, were picked up after detectives impounded 14 vehicles suspected to have been stolen. Ten of the sleek cars were recovered at Lavington, while three others were found at a compound in Westlands. Another was found in Kileleshwa. In the racket, the stolen cars are smuggled to Tanzania for sale. Those stolen from Tanzania are sold here. At times, vehicles are dismantled and the parts sold locally. More than Sh500,000 in cash was seized at the Westlands home and police believe it was part of the proceeds from the sale of a stolen car. The racket was smashed after a car with a satellite tracking device stolen from Murang'a in Central Kenya, was traced to Westlands. Meanwhile, eight police
officers video-taped receiving bribes on Tom Mboya and Landhies roads in Nairobi
have been sacked. | ![]() | |||||||||||||||
