Leopards reach cup semis

Chemelil Sugar beat Ulinzi as Mathare defeat Mumias

By SUNDAY NATION Team

AFC Leopards entered the President's Cup semi-finals with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Kangemi United at City Stadium.

Chemelil Sugar beat Ulinzi stars 2-0 in the first round of the semi-final at the Chemelil Sports Complex yesterday.

AFC Leopards 3 Kangemi 0

AFC Leopards romped into the semi-finals in a replayed quarter-final match yesterday.

Red hot Jack Omondi claimed a brace of goals in the first half while Ramadhan Balala marked his return to the Leopards fold with a cool strike early in the second half to kill off any chance of a Kangemi upset. The two teams battled to a goalless draw a week back.

Leopards will now meet Securicor in a two-leg semi-final tie next Saturday and on November 1.

Omondi, who scored Leopards' goal in their last league match, continued where he had stopped tapping in a cross in the 14th minute.

The industrious striker showed his predatory instincts again in the 34th minute zipping into the box to tap into an unguarded net after Kangemi goalkeeper Peter Khaemba spilled what looked like an easy cross to deal with.

Kenya team trialist Balala then made full use of another blunder by Khaemba to blast the loose ball home in the 59th minute to frenzied beats of Isukuti on the stands.

Kangemi did not give up their search for a reply but lacked the sharpness in front of goal to make any meaningful difference on the score line.

Second half substitute David Opati could have grabbed one back in the 66th minute but failed to get his shot in with Mohammed Fwaya horribly out of position.

Three minutes later Fwaya had to be alert to deal with Harrison Aywa's long range effort.

Kangemi almost opened their account five minutes from time when Gatimu Daniel delightfully rounded off three defenders only to chip over the advancing Fwaya. But the cross bar denied him.

On the bigger picture, Leopards had the better chances in an often scrappy match. Striker Galgalo Kadir was the outright culprit. He was picked well in space by Balala in the 27th minute but shot weakly when he could have done better.

Kadir had a chance to redeem himself in the second half when he followed through a long, searching ball from Livingstone Ondawa only to blast high.

A rugged Leopards' defence ensured they held on to a deserved win.

Chemelil Sugar 2 Ulinzi 0

Chemelil Sugar beat Ulinzi stars 2-0 in the first round of the President's Cup semi-final match at the Chemelil Sports Complex yesterday.

The hosts exerted pressure from the whistle and scored the opener in the seventh minute through James Okal 'Ninja'.

He had picked a loose pass from Mike Obonyo on the right flank and as he prepared to shoot, was brought down a few metres outside the box.

Taking the resultant kick, Okal fired home past displaced goalkeeper Francis Onyiso. Determined to carry the day, the hosts intensified their attack and added the second goal when Dennis Ochieng' drew out an overworked Onyiso to score into the empty net in the 73rd minute.

Mumias Sugar 0 Mathare 1

Poor finishing earned Mumias Sugar defeat in the hands of visiting Mathare United in an ICCG League match at the Mumias Complex.

Mathare, coached by Francis Kimanzi, scored in the 12th minute through Frankline Shelimbe from a pass of Aggrey Ong'oli.

Mumias Sugar fired blanks in the second half.Mathare play Nzoia Sugar at the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma today.

Thika United 0 KCB 0

Thika United held Kenya Commercial Bank 0-0 at the Thika Municipal Stadium. The poorly attended ICCG match saw the hosts dominate in the first half but strikers Thomas Biketi, Haji Bilali and David Njau squandered chances.

The referee Mohammed Yassin from Nairobi flashed a yellow card to Mohammed Ali after a hard tackle on KCB's Kevin Muiruri.
