10,000 families in Garissa face starvation

By NATION Correspondent

Families displaced by drought and the El Nino floods in Garissa District, north-eastern Kenya, face starvation.

The more than 10,000 families are currently camped on the outskirts of Garissa Town in Bulla Skedeg, Bulla Ijara, Bulla Mzuri and Bulla Riig areas.

The families have in the past received relief aid from charities which were however deregistered by the government recently.

The International Red Cross and CARE International ended relief operations in the area last November.

District Commissioner Salim Ali said no food aid was expected from the government in the near future as the district's monthly relief food allocation had been sent to schools which accommodate students from poor families.
