Rights group to sue police over suspect's death

By NATION Correspondent

A human rights group has threatened to sue the Commissioner of Police over the death of a suspect which occurred in police custody.

Mr Khelef Khalifa, an official of the Muslims for Human Rights lobby, said police officers in Mombasa went to Mr Hussein Matano Mwandeka's house on December 20 and ordered his wife to show them guns.

The officers' initial search yielded no weapons and they got Mr Mwandeka from his sand-harvesting work and brought him to dig up his house for guns. They arrested him when this also failed.

Mr Khalifa says the AG should institute an inquest into the death.

Coast police boss Japhet Mwania says he has appointed a team to investigate the death.
