and PPS

A joint choir of public universities rehearses its moves at the Nyayo Stadium yesterday in preparation for Kenyatta Day.

President Mwai Kibaki will today lead the nation in celebrating Kenyatta Day.

The President will lay a wreath at the mausoleum of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta at Parliament Grounds at 10.40 am, before proceeding to Nyayo National Stadium for the celebrations.

Accompanied by the First Lady, Lucy, the President is expected at the Stadium at 10.55 am where he will be received by the Chief of General Staff, Gen Joseph Kibwana.

Several roads leading to Nyayo Stadium will be closed today. They will only be open to vehicles attending the ceremony.

They are Aerodrome and Langata roads, which will be closed between Nairobi West/Madaraka and Lusaka roundabout and Langata Road, which will be one way from Lusaka roundabout towards Nairobi West/Madaraka roundabout.

All vehicles from Langata and Wilson Airport direction, which are not destined for Nyayo Stadium, are advised to follow Mbagathi Way towards City Mortuary roundabout.

Police have asked drivers from Madaraka Estate and Gandhi Avenue to Nairobi West roundabout, to follow Langata and Mbagathi roads towards City Mortuary.

Drivers have been asked to obey the directive from 8am.

* Vice-President Moody Awori has urged Kenyans to remember and pay tribute to independence heroes.

Mr Awori said it was unfortunate that most heroes who fought for independence were in poor health while others were languishing in poverty. The VP spoke after attending a Mass at the Consolata Shrine, Nairobi, yesterday.

"Whether you will be at Uhuru Park or Nyayo Stadium, (today) let us remember our heroes and pray for them." .Kenyatta Day is a day when we remember all brave Kenyans who fought for our independence and the symbol of that struggle is the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta," Mr Awori said.

The VP spoke after attending a Mass at the Consolata Shrine, Nairobi. He was invited to address the congregation and give a Kenyatta Day message by Fr. Marino Gemma.
