Narc parties need to be strengthened, says minister

By NATION Team

Four MPs helped to raise Sh220,000 during the meeting held at Kilifi sports grounds at the weekend. The politicians asked the Government to ensure the new constitution was ready next year.

Cabinet minister Chris Murungaru has called for the strengthening of individual parties in the trouble-torn ruling coalition instead of dissolving them.

But the National Security minister criticised some politicians who, he said, were still gripped with election fever, and called for an end to the wrangles in Narc.

He was speaking at Kewa primary school in Bungoma district during a fund-raising meeting at the weekend.

It was time the Government fulfilled the election pledges, he said, and added that it would not be deterred by what he termed immature politicians driven by lust for power.

"The elections are over and we want to put a permanent end to wrangles and focus on development to meet the expectations of our people. In doing this, we have to get tough with rebels and remove them.

"Let the people feel the difference between seasoned and immature leaders".

More than Sh1.3 million was raised for the school.

But the minister denied there was a tribal element in the purge in the Judiciary as claimed by some people. He accused Kanu MPs of creating confusion over the suspension of judges.

The Ringera report that linked the judges to corruption was fair, he said, adding that the Government was lenient to the named judges for giving them the option to resign.

"If they resigned and went home, nobody would follow them. But the Government is determined to rid the Judiciary of corruption,'' he said.

In another development, a group of Narc MPs allied to LDP vowed not to pull out of the coalition.

Mr Joe Khamis (Bahari), Dr Oburu Odinga (Bondo), Mr Gor Sunguh (Kisumu East) and Mr Wycliffe Osundwa (Mumias) said at the Kilifi stadium that the party would remain in Narc forever.

But Mr Osundwa said LDP must be respected and not told to disband. Dr Odinga said Narc would remain together forever. "Kenyans should ignore the wrangles because LDP is still loyal to the coalition," he said.
