March
01 2003 What purpose
does a Mountain Bike serve if not for biking up and down mountains? In
Kenya, on March 01, the Bill Woodley Mount Kenya Trust is setting the ultimate
Mountain Bike challenge and pitting would-be bikers against mighty Mount Kenya
itself. Starting
at 10,000 feet on the forested slopes on the Timau side of the mountain, pretenders
to the 10 to 4 Challenge will tackle a 50 km route dropping down to the Ngare
Ndare forest, over the escarpment and down to 4,000 feet to finish at the award
winning eco-lodge, Il Ngwesi. The
up-side to this exhilarating challenge is that it is downhill most of the way
6,000 feet downhill! - taking bikers through some of the spectacular mountain
forests with their giant mutant plant forms, across the dramatic escarpment and
down to the hot, semi-arid Laikipia plateau. The
10 to 4 Mountain Bike Challenge has been organized as a fund raising event for
the Bill Woodley Mount Kenya Trust, which carries out a variety of conservation
projects on Mount Kenya including, forest rehabilitation, fencing and anti-poaching
programmes. There
are still a few places left for any mountain bikers up for the challenge and entry
costs just Ksh 3,000/-. If
