Kenya Railways operates with a fleet of about 218 locomotives for the main line, branch lines and shanting. It has a carrying capacity of about 6,400 wagons and about 500 coaching units. The rolling stock operates along the 2,700 Km route that connects Mombasa with Kampala, Nairobi with Mombasa and Kisumu.

KR provides a freight service within the country and also handles transit traffic to and from landlocked countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zaire and PTA countries.

Kenya Railways plays a major role in passenger movement in the country. It operates the following services: Mombasa - Nairobi and vice versa, Nairobi - Malaba and vice versa, Kahawa - Nairobi and vice versa.

The Corporation operates an inland Waterways Service in Lake Victoria for the movement of freight and passenger, within Kenya Section of the Lake. It operates one wagon ferry between Jinja (Uganda) and Kisumu for inter-country movement of wagons and trucks supplementary to rail and road traffic through Malaba. KR has also two freight tugs and nine lighters as well as three passenger vessels on Lake Victoria.

Kenya Railways provides catering services for the travelling public in the trains, marine vessels and railway restaurants in Nairobi and Nakuru. There are, to a lesser degree, catering services at Mombasa and Kisumu, but in the trains, vessels and restaurants, services include full meals, varieties of wines and other drinks and, in the trains and vessels, beddings. The fares are inclusive of Dinner, Breakfast and Beddings. KR also provides outside catering during state and private functions when required.

Nairobi - Malaba- Kampala

Tuesdays departing from Nairobi at 10.00 hrs, arriving in Kampala at 09.15 hrs the following morning.

Kampala - Malaba - Nairobi

Wednesdays departing from Kampala at 16.00 hrs, arriving in Nairobi at 14.35 hrs the following afternoon.
